Brunswick, Ohio is a city in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 34,255 at the 2010 census.
Brunswick was founded in 1810 by John M. Pattinson and Lorenzo Dikes. Pattinson, originally from Connecticut, was a Revolutionary War veteran who settled in Ohio in 1800. Dikes built the first cabin in Brunswick and laid out the town's streets. The town was named after Braunschweig, Germany, the hometown of one of its early settlers.
Brunswick became the county seat of Medina County in 1818 and has remained such ever since. The city grew rapidly in its early years due largely to its position as a stop on the Underground Railroad, which helped runaway slaves escape to freedom in the Northern United States and Canada.
In 1866, Brunswick was nearly destroyed by a tornado that killed 27 people and injured 100. The city was rebuilt in the ensuing years and continued to grow.
The arrival of the Cleveland and Medina Railroad in 1874 brought further growth to Brunswick. The completion of Interstate 71 in the late 1960s led to an influx of suburban development and increased tourism.
The first settlers in Brunswick were of German descent and arrived in the early 1800s. The town was named after Brunswick, Germany, and was originally part of Medina County.
